First Introduction to Video Games

It all began when my dad arrived home from work one day, carrying a bag with what looked like a black rectangular box. My 3 year old mind was as curious as ever, with no idea what it could be. After a while of my parents setting this box up, that iconic PlayStation 2 boot noise played, a copy of "Ratchet and Clank 2002" was loaded in, and a controller was placed in my hands. I had no idea what was in store for me, but I was in for quite the ride!

Introduction to Game Development

Since a young age my brain was always curious with how something was created, or how it worked behind the scenes. I would want to understand everything in depth from scratch, tinker with things and play with them.

Playing video games had always given me immense joy and fantastic memories, but it wasn't until I played "LittleBigPlanet" for the PlayStation 3 where I realised I could make my own games and show them to the world. That game taught me the basics of game design, programming and music composition, all of which piqued my interests.

Introduction to Game Engines + First Developed Game

I was then introduced to 2D Game Engine "Scratch" during my ICT classes in secondary school, and created small, fun projects, such as a top down racing game and a platformer.

But my real delve into game development started in 2017, where I was introduced to the Unity Game Engine, where I developed my first proper video game in using C#. Our challenge was to create a maze game. I enjoyed the development process so much, I would sometimes spend my evening hours into the morning, as I loved the process so much and tried hard to create a good game. I titled it "Escape the Bathtub!", which was rated first amongst peers and mentors. It was there I realised I wanted to take my passion of playing and making games, and turn it in to my future career.

University

I was accepted to SAE Institute London University in 2019, where I started learning about C++ Video Games Programming. There, I made a "Space Shooter" game in a custom game engine, and learned about SDL, OpenGL, game math and logic. I learned about Video Game Graphics in more detail, and made a small project to render shapes with textures. I learned about Networking and built a small project to test 2 players and 2 screens, where the players would move and update each other's positions on both screens.

I collaborated with a team of 3 people and made a Unity game titled "Jello Blunder", which was a brawler type game with 2 jelly cubes trying to push each other off the map, where I was in charge of implementing the player model, programming the player movement and UI elements.

Finally for my dissertation, I wanted to learn about Artificial Intelligence in Games, so I made 2 projects.

The first project involved a buddy AI following the player and helping the player with pushing buttons and extending a bridge.

The final project was the most complex one out of all, and involved making an Animal AI Ecosystem simulation, which involved Prey, Predators, food, water and the ability to reproduce. Throughout the whole course, I put effort into researching many games and game developers to have a better understanding of games design and what makes a game fun and engaging.

Post-University + Personal Projects

After university, I have since then worked on multiple Unity projects, including a project to practice implementing a survival game genre, a "top down online multiplayer infinite shooter", and have attended a 2 week game jam with the theme of "Shadows and Alchemy" in a team of 5 people. Our team created a 2D Platformer Stealth game titled "Nightweave", where I was in charge of programming all of the player's controls and combat mechanics, focusing on responsive and snappy movement, and giving the player as much control as possible.

Current Up To Date Adventures!

To date, I am enrolled in a Games Engine Bootcamp (IN4.0 Skill City), where I am focusing on mastering the Unity Game Engine for robust game development. The course teaches the Unity Game Engine, Programming, Game Design, Asset Creation, VFX, Shaders, UI and more!

As well as that, a part of the bootcamp involves working on an Industry Project that I am able to put on my portfolio. I am currently working in a team of 7, where I took the initiative to become the team leader for the first time in a project, with the main goal to organise, plan and manage the team and the project, as well as improve my teamwork skills.

I am also currently working on my latest game project, titled "Ascendant Isles", a first person game about satisfying and fast paced platforming, enemy combat, and solving puzzles using your power to control the wind element!

I am extremely passionate about game development, and hope to join a Game Company/Studio and help develop games in a team that is as passionate about games as I am!
